Frequently Asked Questions
Whatever window you choose - wood, vinyl or vinyl clad, proper maintenance will lengthen their life and efficiency.
Moving parts should be lubricated each spring and fall. They are especially prone to problems if they are near ground level where dirt and dust can accumulate in joints. Avoid getting paint on metal parts and weather-stripping as this could hinder their performance. It is not necessary or advisable to remove screws to lubricate hardware - just use a silicone lubricant, being careful of eyes and clothing.
Wood windows should be painted or stained, as soon as possible. Your paint dealer can give excellent advice as to what will best meet conditions where you live.
Even maintenance free vinyl performs best when a little care is taken. A solution of dish detergent and water is generally all that is required for dust and accidental marking removal. Never use abrasive cleaners. For hard to remove marks, use non-abrasive sink cleaning creams or automobile interior vinyl cleaner. Solvents and stripping compounds will damage the vinyl.
Felt marker ink and such products will need to be professionally removed or
the window part replaced, because they usually penetrate the vinyl.
